HALL, REPUBLICANS KEEP GOVERNMENT OPEN WHILE CUTTING SPENDING, ENCOURAGING JOB GROWTH

 

WASHINGTON, DC . . .  Rep. Ralph Hall (TX-04) released the following statement after the House, Senate, and White House came to a budget agreement last night for the remainder of fiscal year (FY) 2011:

 

"Last night the House reached a bipartisan agreement on spending cuts - the largest in American history - immediately cutting $38.5 billion in federal spending, while fully funding our servicemen and women. This is just months after President Obama asked Congress for a spending "freeze" that would mean zero cuts.  Republicans' successful negotiation represents the largest year-to-year spending cuts since World War II.  Over the next decade the agreement will continue to cut hundreds of billions of dollars from the federal budget, officially ending the spending binge that began in 2009 with the "stimulus," and setting the stage for trillions more in spending cuts.

 

"When they controlled both the House and Senate last year, Washington Democrats neglected to pass a budget, though they did pass a national takeover of healthcare.  As a result, when the new Republican Majority convened in January, we were given the task of passing a budget that would fund the federal government while upholding the pledge we made to the American people to cut out-of-control spending.

 

"Despite the fact that Republicans control only one-half of three branches of government in Washington, an agreement was reached that not only achieved two-thirds of our spending cuts, but guarantees a Senate debate and vote to repeal Obama healthcare and defund Planned Parenthood.  This agreement is the answer to a pledge the Americans expect, and one that is in keeping with Tea Party determination to 'take back our country.'

 

"Though these cuts are a first step towards serious budget reform, it is critical that we continue to make significant cuts to promote an environment for job creation and economic growth.  We have an obligation to the American people to get the government budget balanced, and that's what I'm working to do as we now turn our focus on passing a budget for FY 2012, advancing our fight from saving billions of dollars to saving trillions."
